Moving Checklist
Four Weeks to Go:
- File a change of address form with the post office.
- Inform your creditors and subscription services of your new address.
- Research doctors and dentists in your new location.
- Set aside items to be donated or sold through a garage sale.
- Arrange the time of work.
- Buy boxes, tape, and other moving supplies.
- Make an inventory of your items and assign their values.
- Arrange utility services to be turned on or off at your new and old homes.
- Inform your child’s school of your upcoming move.
Three Weeks to Go:
- List the important names and phone numbers you need to remember.
- Plan how you will move your pets and houseplants.
- Inform your bank of your upcoming move and make the necessary arrangements regarding your safe deposit box.
- Check if moving is covered by your home insurance plan.
- Transfer your insurance to cover your new home.
Two Weeks to Go:
- If you will ship a vehicle, clean it out and have its fluids topped off.
- Start packing your belongings.
- Make the necessary travel arrangements.
- Have your appliances serviced.
- Dispose of aerosol cans, gasoline and bleach containers, and other hazardous or flammable items.
- Discontinue your newspaper delivery, trash pickup, lawn services, etc.
One Week to Go:
- Arrange for driver payments at your destination.
- Set aside valuable items and personal belongings that will travel with you.
- Drain fuel from your lawn mower and other gas-powered equipment.
The Day Before:
- Prepare a move-in box containing towels, paper plates, your vacuum cleaner, and other items you will immediately need at your new home.
- Ensure all your belongings are properly packed.
- Prepare all important documents related to the move.
- Defrost and clean your refrigerator.
Moving Day:
- Plan to be at the home when the movers arrive.
- Your driver will provide you with a utility parts box for storing your loose parts so they are always together and easily accessible.
- Take a final walkthrough of your home to ensure nothing has been overlooked.
- Sign the bill of lading, elect your valuation protection coverage, and see if your new address and phone numbers are correct.
- Turn off all switches and lock the doors and windows.
Move-In Day:
- Try to arrive early to check if the utilities of your new home are connected.
- Prepare the driver’s payment.
- Unpack and get settled in your new home.
